| To the West lies Arles and the Carmargue, passing through the historic town of Aix en Provence, with its beautiful buildings, cafes, restaurants and boutiques. Mont St. Victoire, which was the source of Cezanne's best paintings, lies just outside of Aix. To the East, passing through Cannes, Nice and Monaco, lies the Italian border, which is 90 minutes drive from Cotignac.
The charming, unspoiled village of Cotignac has many restaurants and bars. The main square containing fountains and lined with shady plane trees is an ideal setting for the cafes and is the scene of a weekly market selling the local produce of vegetables, goats cheese, olives, herbs and honey.
The local wines are excellent and inexpensive and the local olive oil and olives are of superb quality. The village nestles below a failaise (cliff) of gigantic proportions composed of Tufa rock riddled with caves. The cliff is dramatically floodlit throughout the year and provides a marvellous backdrop to the pantiled houses and narrow winding streets. The open air theatre, which is set against the cliff, stages performances of classical music, dance and drama throughout the summer months. The charming village summer fetes which take place every weekend throughout the region provide an amusing entertainment for the whole family with music and dancing, paid for by the local communities.
Cotignac is surrounded by a wealth of chateaux, monasteries, museums, antique shops and galleries. The Var region boasts the maximum hours of sunshine in the whole of France, ensuring almost guaranteed sunny weather for most of the year. The winters are incredibly mild, with almost permanent blue skies; the "thermal pocket" which exists around the Cotignac area ensures spectacular early springs with the flowers and blossom creating a euphoric atmosphere, and stunning long late autumns. |
